Meet Tyler, Elevate's Global Head of Marketing

Updated: May 3

Nestled in the heart of the rural English countryside, you’ll find the mastermind behind Elevate’s global Marketing strategy – and his impressive collection of plaid shirts. That’s right, for April’s Meet the Team, we’re heading back into the services team to get to know our Global Head of Marketing and Communications, Tyler. From Presenter, to BDM, to future San-Fran office GM, to Head of Marketing, it’s been a wild ride at Elevate for Tyler so far, and he’s been kind enough to tell us all about it...

Tell us a bit about your time at Elevate so far

I started off as a presenter in the West Midlands in 2016, which at that point, only had two presenters in the region. I presented for two years, becoming a TL in the second, before being asked to join the office as a BDM which was really exciting. This involved a move down to London - an experience I absolutely loved.

While I was BDM’ing, an opportunity arose for an office team member to open up a new Elevate Office in San Francisco through the ‘What’s Next’ programme. As a result, for a period, I was flying between London, New York (for training on how the US office was established), and then through to San Francisco to get schools on board and take a look at hiring and training presenters. Unfortunately, Covid then hit in 2020 and it put an end to that – temporarily, we thought, at the time. During some discussions around what alternative avenues I’d be interested in exploring at Elevate in the meantime, I explained that I’d always been interested in marketing. I knew we didn’t have a marketing department, so I asked whether there might be an opportunity for me to have a go at building one up – and I haven’t looked back!

I’ve been Head of Marketing now for four years, and in that time the team has grown, as has our scope, and there’s plenty more to come!

What did you study and why?

My degree was a joint honours degree in English Literature and Drama, which I did at the University of Birmingham. I chose this mix because I thought I wanted to be an English or a Drama teacher, which didn’t end up happening... Once I’d completed my degree, I went on to teach Maths instead, which was a curveball no one was expecting!

What do I enjoy most about my role?

It’s probably all the new stuff we’re finally getting the chance to do – bringing back Notes from HQ was really exciting. We’re also doing a lot around creating blogs and content designed to help parents directly, which is something we’ve always wanted to do in order to keep Elevate accessible to everyone. We’re striving to ensure we keep providing value to teachers, students, and parents, and to have the opportunity to do that now through new and creative content is really, really exciting.

Favourite food?

I’d have to go for basically anything Mexican – burritos, chimichangas, the whole shebang. Even the desserts. Churros? Best of them all.

Favourite Film/TV Series?

Favourite series is Trying on Apple TV. It’s a beautiful series- funny, sad, it will make you laugh, it will make you cry. It’s beautifully written, really well-directed and also based in a part of London I used to live in. Favourite film has got to be Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.  Amazing film, I’ve probably seen it about 13 or 14 times.

Go-to karaoke song?

‘Mardy Bum’ by the Artic Monkeys

What are you most excited about at Elevate at the moment?

With Dip’s new role and all the stuff we’re doing with Notes from HQ I think we’ve never felt closer to the presenters. I’m really excited about strengthening those internal communications and being able to get presenters excited about what life at Elevate looks like. For me, one of the things I always used to find really interesting as a presenter was what other countries were doing. I’m hoping that’s what Notes from HQ is helping to do – show how much bigger Elevate is than all of us. So, the more stuff we can do there, the more exciting that’s going to become.

What’s your hidden talent that no one knows about?

It’s statistically impossible to beat me at a game of Crash Team Racing – well, not impossible...but statistically improbable.

Thanks, Tyler, for giving us a peek into the world of marketing at Elevate. Perhaps next time you can enlighten those of us who have no idea what Crash Team Racing is.
